The best of both worlds
Rörick was founded in 1947 by Uno Rörick in Ekebybro, just outside of Köping in Sweden. For 75 years the company has helped the Swedish industry to solve problems and today Rörick is a market leader in repairs of servo motors and larger machines. The company was acquired by Momentum Group in 2008 and was the start of the Group’s initiative in industrial services.
Lotta Rörick is the Managing Director of Rörick. It was her grandfather Uno who founded the company that he managed together with his wife Stina. Lotta remembers what it was like during her childhood: “Rörick has always been an important part of my life and I have worked there since I was young. When we expanded with the workshop in Västerås, I started working in the company full time. A few years later when I had my first child, I was back in Köping.”
In the autumn of 2007, Rörick was approached by two companies that wanted to acquire the family business. “We had long discussions in the family about the future and our preferences and I wanted to be part of a larger context. Together we concluded that we wanted to sell.”
An advisor was assigned to start the search for the perfect buyer. The family themselves had some suggestions for potential buyers that were added to the list. “It was our advisor that proposed Momentum Group. They had just finished another process for them, and they thought that Rörick would fit perfectly into the new strategy. Momentum Industrial, also a group company, was our supplier and we didn’t think of them as a potential buyer as we considered them a product company and of course we didn’t know that they were interested in entering services.”
The acquisition process went quickly and smoothly, driven by the fact that Lotta was expecting her second child, that was born in the middle of the DD process. In August 2008, the acquisition of Rörick was completed, which became the start of Momentum Group’s initiative within industrial services. “We chose Momentum Group because they had a clear plan for what they wanted with the company and for us in the family and how they wanted to develop the business. Their offer was simply the most attractive for us. They were also responsive and we felt that they had a genuine interest in us.”
The acquisition was completed just before the crisis in the autumn of 2008, which meant that the integration process was delayed. “On the positive side it created time for reflection and more time to get to know each other’s businesses. When the crisis was over, we had a clear understanding on how we best could work together. It was at this time that I stepped in as Managing Director of Rörick.”
“As a company in Momentum Group, Rörick and its management has great freedom, but also the responsibility, to continue to develop the company independently. Business decisions are made close to customers and suppliers. The operating activities are run independently – within the common strategic framework – with local responsibility for profit and profitability. This creates a great deal of flexibility to adapt offers based on customers’ needs.”
It also means that employees get and take great personal responsibility with good opportunities to develop in a successful business. At the same time, the size of the Group means that the companies and employees are supported with the large company’s opportunities. An example of this for Rörick is the growth via acquisitions the company has accomplished over the years – in 2020 Rörick bought a business from SKF (spindle service operations) and in 2021, Rörick acquired the service workshop operations from Assemblin (i.e. the old NEA Verkstäder). Together the acquired businesses have added 100 MSEK in turnover and 50 employees.
“Momentum Group really lives up to the core value decentralized responsibility. I feel that they have great confidence in how I run and develop the business and at the same time I have an accomplished and committed Group management and board that always are there for advice and support. It is simply the best of both worlds”, Lotta concludes.
